2013-11-7：跨界交響（台灣迪卡儂公司紡織部門李佳芬小姐）

被許多人視為高分子科學開山祖師的美國物理化學家保羅．弗洛里（Paul J. Flory, 1910-1985）在1974年領取美國化學學會頒給他的學會最高榮譽獎章普利斯特里獎（Priestley Medal）時，說了一段後來被許多人引用的話：

Significant inventions are not mere accidents. The erroneous view is widely held, and it is one that the scientific and technological community, unfortunately, has done little to dispel. Happenstance usually plays a part, to be sure, but there is much more to invention than the popular notion of a bolt from the blue. Knowledge in depth and in breadth are virtual prerequisites. Unless the mind is fully charged beforehand, the proverbial spark of genius, if it should manifest itself, probably will find nothing to ignite.

在幾位因為高分子科學方面的貢獻而獲頒諾貝爾獎的科學家當中，弗洛里的成就與經歷也還是相當地與眾不同。其他幾位不是玩理論的，就是做實驗的，但弗洛里兩個都做，而且都有重要成果。更有趣的是，他是其中唯一一位在業界與學界進進出出，而且兩邊都待了相當長時間的科學家，而讓他得獎的工作有一大半是他在工業界的研發成果。

因此，當這樣的科學家說 Knowledge in depth and in breadth are virtual prerequisites 的時候，心裡所想的 breadth 絕對不止於學院裡純粹由知性上的興趣所驅動的，必然也包括業界裡由實際需求與潛在應用所激發的。或許對他來說，在理論與實驗兩邊的跨界悠游，和結合學界與業界所譜出的跨界交響沒有什麼差別，都是好奇心與興趣所引領的。

弗洛里除了在科學上的成就外，也是個熱愛登山、游泳的運動健將。如果他能再多活個十到十五年，就會看到他畢生研究的高分子科學和運動科學開始進行高科技融合。明天，十一月七日（週四）中午十二點十分，在理學大樓一樓A101教室，台灣迪卡儂公司紡織部門的李佳芬小姐將要告訴我們，她如何像弗洛里一樣地悠游自在地跨界、如何結合高分子科學與運動科學。
